MAD | Murate Art District

MAD | Murate Art District

MAD is a cultural district, a creation and residency space dedicated to contemporary artistic languages in a transdisciplinary approach, open to artists of all ages and backgrounds. Located in the former convent of the Murate, then city prison, MAD inherits the memory of the monumental complex and reactivates it thanks to the presence of the artists who live there daily, making it a place of freedom and research.

MAD Murate art District is located in the monumental complex of the Murate, in a quadrilateral between via Ghibellina, via dell’Agnolo and viale della Giovine Italia.
The complex, owned by the municipality, includes the former 15th century monastery transformed into a prison from 1883 to 1985, divided into two squares: Piazza delle Murate, and Piazza della Madonna della Neve, divided by Via delle Vecchie Carceri, and the Chapel of the Madonna della Neve. MAD – Murate Art District is located in the spaces of the old convent, it is articulated on 3 floors, and guards the Carcere Duro, a pulsating testimony of the Resistance operated by the fathers of the Republic during the Fascist period.

The centre is open from tuesday to saturday from 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Closed for public holidays.
